Mahabalipuram: Carved in Stone by the Sea

Just a short drive from Chennai, Mahabalipuram (Mamallapuram) is a seaside town where history is quite literally carved into the rocks. It was once a bustling seaport for the ancient Pallava dynasty.

Why You Should Visit: It is a UNESCO World Heritage site that beautifully marries stunning ancient architecture with a laid-back surfer vibe.

Top Experiences:

  • The Shore Temple: Built in the 8th century, this structural temple overlooks the Bay of Bengal. It is especially beautiful during sunrise or sunset when the stone glows with golden light.

  • Pancha Rathas (Five Chariots): Five monolithic temples, each carved from a single massive rock, named after the Pandavas from the Mahabharata.

  • Arjuna’s Penance: A giant open-air rock relief depicting scenes from Hindu mythology and everyday life in ancient India. Don’t forget to take a playful photo pushing “Krishna’s Butterball,” a massive balancing rock nearby!

Travel Tip: After exploring the ruins, head to the beachside shacks for some of the freshest and most delicious seafood in the region.
